Epilepsy is a disease of the brain and often affects any age and sex in any society. Similarly, other forms of description are fits or convulsion. However, some epilepsy runs in the family and therefore has a genetic factor and social factors.

Many factors can cause seizures, factors such as high body temperature, strokes, oxygen deprivation to the brain. Furthermore, head injuries, brain tumours and infections of the brain. There should be repeated unprovoked seizures and medical diagnosis to confirm it is epilepsy, including family history.

There are many types of seizures. Usually, the kind of seizure experienced by individuals will depend on the location of the disruption within the brain.

What Causes Epilepsy

There is communication between the nerve cells in the brain that either gets excited and or interrupt other brain cells from sending messages to the affected brain area. Similarly, these electrical messages once affected can cause malfunction and frequent seizures. Seizures cannot be concluded to be a disease in themselves, and instead, it can be said to be clinical symptoms of many different disorders that affect the brain. However, most seizures have silent appearances. Meanwhile, other forms of seizures can be disabling and well noticed. Help should be sort immediately.

What To Do

Never hold the casualty down or put anything in their mouth. Also, call the emergency team if a seizure lasts for more than 5 minutes

The Casualty’s level of response deteriorates or did not improve within 5 minutes

Seizure happen the second time

The casualty is a known epileptic sufferer

Monitor airway and breathing if you can

If Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is needed and you are trained to do so then commence immediately

Ensure to ask someone to call 999 and begin CPR

Epilepsy can be a fearful experience. However, there is a family help, medical treatment and support.
