DEALING WITH THE EFFECTS OF CORONAVIRUS AT HOME:

Coronavirus and psychosocial at home is undoubtedly challenging and daunting.  The government, the NHS, healthcare workers have pleaded for everyone to stay at home.  The people of the United Kingdom have listened and now staying at home indefinitely.  THANK YOU.  How do we cope with staying at home after some time?  How do we manage the psychosocial implications of staying at home longer than usual?

CORONAVIRUS AND WELL-BEING

Staying off work and at home in a normal situation is a relief to have a good rest, fulfil schedule travelling, carry out plans and many other arrangements that need accomplishing.  Proper sleep and freedom to do whatever you want, such as activities of daily living, exercises, a balanced diet, healthy lifestyle and some DIY.  However, at present, the type of staying at home is abnormal and compulsory.  Moreover, it presents anxiety, worries, fear of the unknown and financial insecurity.  The schools and businesses closed, freedom of movement, job security and health are compromised.  Society seeks a quick solution to eradicate Coronavirus as soonest and to build back a healthy life.

HOW DO WE OVERCOME PSYCHOSOCIAL STRESS

It is indeed a challenging time. Who would have thought that the beautiful Christmas and the New Year celebrated only just a few months ago, will turn around to hunt humanity this way with Coronavirus.  People have been unwell, and many have lost their lives and the worse of all, families are not allowed to visit loved ones at the hospital.  And, not even wife, sons, daughters and grandchildren have the chance to hold the hands of the loved ones, and to watch the last breath taken, and to say their goodbyes.  How terrible is this?  It is cruel.

At this point, our heart goes to affected families throughout the world.  We are sorry that we were unable to save their lives, and we pay our condolences with hymns (ABIDE WITH ME: IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL: ROCK OF AGES: NEARER MY GOD TO THEE: AND GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS).  Nurses and Doctors are now families to patients, standing by them and telling them it is going to be alright.  Meanwhile, Nurses gives the end of life care and final respect, while tears roll down their cheeks.  Moreover, some patients were lucky to use mobile phones, iPad to receive goodbyes from families.  It is not pleasant, isn’t it?  Personally, nearly two decades of Intensive Care Nursing have not seen anything like this.  It is right to say; indeed, it is strange.

Similarly, can life ever be the same again?  Fear for the future is building up every day, will l be infected, will l survive, my business, jobs, plans for life, weddings, birth and children, healthy ways of life, will it ever be normal again.  All of these questions need answers.

COPING OR NOT COPING AT HOME

However, all is not lost.  It is time to fight back by getting rid of anxiety, fears and worries.  Everyone copes differently and accepting the situation we are in, taking responsibility and discipline, is the first victory.  Obeying the government and medical officer’s advise is another step to accomplishing a positive way forward.  Coping at home can be a moment for reflection, guess time to do those things that you had wanted to do of which time does not permit.  Things like learning passionate hobbies, such as drawing, reading novels, learning musical instruments, dancing, singing, painting, sewing.  Also, online learning, DIY, wedding planner, motivational speech, and time to think of creativity that will earn you additional income working from home, when life comes back to normal.  Re-kindle your love to partners and family.

Is it time to get occupied with creativity and think less of Coronavirus?  Coronavirus is a phase, and it will pass anyhow, just nobody knows how long it will linger around.  However, have a fighting spirit, get up and do something beautiful for yourself, whether staying at home or going to work.  It is a situation that we are in 2020.  It is nobody’s fault, and we have to face it and find a way to get over it, while the government get on with it to find the quickest solutions possible. 

Music is a functional psychotherapy proven by Neurologist.  Play music, for music, brings joy and happiness, dance, meditate, yoga if you can, and exercise.  Maintain a balanced diet, and put your mind at rest; we are all in it together.  Eat well, and sleep well, and don’t worry, everything will be alright again.  Moreover, our scientists, infection and disease experts are looking for a solution critically at present.

Overall, Nurses will remain the dedicated ring bearers and the frontline carers, caring for all patients.  Bear with us, for our hearts are bleeding too.  Look after one another, live in peace and harmony.  One most significant medicine towards all of these is LOVE.  Stand together as a family and show affection to one another.  Love conquers many negative things, where love exists, there are lights and light overrides darkness.  Watch films together, play music and enjoy it together at home, be happy.  I leave you all in peace while we carry on caring for our dear patients in the intensive care unit.  There will always be joy in the morning and may Coronavirus not steal our joy and freedom.  May life treat you kind, and find you a comforter during this challenging phase of life, and forever.

CORONAVIRUS STAY AT HOME FOR US

STAY AT HOME FOR US WE ARE AT THE HOSPITAL WORKING:

We are at the hospital Intensive Care Unit, looking after Coronavirus patients.  We have a duty of care at hands right now, and we understand it is not easy to make a change of a lifestyle overnight.  Still, it is achievable to stay healthy and alive and not infected or spreading the virus further, meaning more work for us if it continues to spread.  We are caring for and treating Coronavirus patients face-face, and it is real.

EVERYONE HAVE A DUTY OF CARE AND RESPONSIBILITY

The government knows everyone needs to eat and meet social amenities and so they are on it.  Above all else, avoid droplets at all cost.  Cover your food and drinks wherever you may be as nobody knows when anyone will sneeze or cough, cook your food in your kitchen and take responsibility.  Wash your hands regularly after touching anything unclean.  Be careful touching the door handles, if sharing a flat or a home.  Whatever you consider vulnerable.  Do not touch your eyes, face, mouth. Avoid eating anything without first wash your hands.  Moisturise your hands after washing your hands, because hands get dry quickly.

Moreover, eat well, and exercise in your flat or gardens and that will be healthy.  The Coronavirus phase will pass in due course.  We are busy and have put this piece of health promotion and education together for everyone, during interval breaks.

KEEP YOUR PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING INTACT

Don’t worry about anything, and we are on it for everyone.  Please, pray for Nurses and Doctors at this time.  Some of us will get infected and who knows how many will survive.  Some of us have young children, husbands, wives, friends and parents too.  However, this is our vacation rather a job, and we have our duty of care under control for everyone.  After all, a soldier goes to war, not knowing what the future holds, yet they represent and protect us.  It is time for genuine dedication, compassion, empathy and commitment.  Above all else, we believe that we can achieve victory if you, the government and healthcare professionals, work together.

CORONAVIRUS IS DECLARED PANDEMIC

WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS:

Coronavirus is now a pandemic according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), and the virus can cause illness from a common cold to more severe diseases such as respiratory syndrome.  It is said to transmit between person to person or among people.  At present, it is difficult to find the actual source of the Pandemic, but researchers are on it.  Today, WHO has officially declared Coronavirus as a PANDEMIC.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS

High Temperature

Breathing difficulty (Shortness of breath)

Tiredness

However, when having these symptoms, it does not necessarily mean the virus is present. It is difficult to know what type of flu it is until tested.  The primary symptoms are not different from a common cold or flu.  Still, it can divert to the more severe illness and in need of hospitalisation, causing pneumonia, difficulty in breathing and escalating to more severe disease.  However, it is best to follow the Coronavirus Test rule laid down by your Federal Ministry of Health, and the World Health at large.  Report any symptoms to your healthcare provider as soon as possible and abstain from gatherings as much possible.  Travel if deemed necessary and check the status of Coronavirus in the country or cities that you are going and the land of abode, before travelling.

WHAT TO DO TO AVOID CATCHING THE SPREAD 

It is vital to wash hands with soap and water efficiently after every activity.  Cover mouth and nose whenever you cough or sneeze, use tissues or handkerchief and throw them in the bin straight away, remember to wash your hands.  Please, do not touch your nose, eyes, mouth or food if your hands are not clean.  It is time to take hand washing very seriously, of which here at SaintAlexandra, we have advocated the need for handwashing several times. Try to avoid close contact with gatherings and follow healthcare safety measures of the country that you live.  Take plenty of fruits, water, and ensure your vitamin C level is adequate.  Eat natural food and boost your electrolytes and energy, keep safe.

Cure presently is unknown, and World Scientists are working very hard to find solutions to cure and eradicate the virus.  Currently, no antibiotics recommendation is known. However, treatment will continue anyhow to find what works for an individual.

Music is medicinal, joyful, and healing of the mind.  The power of music is enormous in health.  It takes control of our emotion positively.  Often people cry, smile, dance, feel happy, fall in love and all in the name of music.  But, what is it in music that its so powerful to capture our inner feelings so passionately. The songs shapes movement and psychological well being.  And, dancing is good for the heart, brain, digestive system, bones, muscles and other organ functions.  It promotes physical and mental stability in all circumstances.  Dancing is so good that l thought if only we can just sing and dance, the world would remain a better place to live.

THE POWER OF SONGS

Music is old and has been in existence from the very beginning and today lives on. Music survives language barrier, ethnicity, gender, sex and inequality.  Music and dancing bring people together all over the world and does not matter if you understand the language used or not, the passion in the voice, the beats, drums all said it all.  You just dance along, even if only to shake the head, it heals the mind, music is a great physician. Long ago, music was a form of a messenger, and great people pass messages through music to the world. The musicians sang with passion and compassion and not for money or fame; they sang so beautifully and delivered the news with enthusiasm.

The introduction of cool and calm music to the hospitals for in-patient is paramount. One may argue about the negative impact, but no, it provides a positive outcome if the right music is delivered.  Music therapy is undoubtedly necessary for critically ill patients, and it depends on circumstances.  However, it does help to heal the mind and make the pain ease off gradually.  It brightens the day and brings hope alive, reduces anxiety and stress of all callings.  Music helps with the sleeping problem and a useful source of meditation.  It is suitable for comfort, and the healing of headaches, hyperactive and underactive moods.  Music is a world-class physician.  Who does not like or want a piece of music?  We need songs for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and also any gathering.  And, indeed, songs are part of a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, everyone should embrace quality music to promote their health.

If you cherish creativity, then this is your vision, your goal. Stick to your vision and have the confidence in whatever that you want to do. Your work will always speak for you and if you like your work surely many people will like it too and does not mean everybody will like it, because it is human nature to like and dislike.  Put commitment and focus into your work, work hard and find those who share the same interest in your work and network with them.

Necessity is the mother of invention as the saying goes, but what does this mean in a simple language.  Well, it is right to say that it means putting your mind, body, love and soul into your passion and achieving extraordinary positive results.  A necessity in demand to break free of a situation in need.

Today, it is clear that if we want something different in our lives, we will have to do something different too.  Change our styles of thinking to experiment that fundamental skills. Everyone has a skill beneath called passion.  We all have a passion, such as hobbies and what else that we love doing outside our normal duty of responsibility.  Many people excel in life with their passionate hobbies instead of what they studied in school, vocational training or trade.

Everyone has possession of one or more passionate skills.  These skills come as a gift or developed knowledge of creativity. It is what we love doing, singing, sports, dancing, drawing, pottering, writing and acting. Others include communicators, caregivers, engineering, mathematicians, poetry, comedian, to mention a few.  A must skill to break through a circumstance.

UTILISE YOUR POTENTIAL

Utilise your potential to connect with the force that drives your determination, ambition,  vision, energy and ability to identify that inner confidence, an unshakable belief in yourself, to fulfil that potential.

Life is a journey. There are occasions when things become too hard, too much, or even too big to apprehend, and then we want to give up.  Don’t give up instead show empowerment over the situation and aim to achieve your goal, come what may.

Success does not come in one day, it takes time and planning.  Overall, the starting point is self willingness to go the extra mile, confidence, determination, focus and commitment.  You can always say to yourself, yes, l can do this by taking a chance.  Listen to the inspiration of your inner mind, seek Wisdom and share opinion.  Sharing of opinion, many will say don’t sell out your ideas, but how will the idea be put into the test to ascertain if the public will accept your idea or not.  It also encourages verbal research among people when we share ideas, you only need to find those who share the same interest as yours, and it is cost-effective compared to actual ideological research.

Necessity is the mother of invention.  However, it is hard work, but with determination, the sky will be the limit no matter how long it takes.  A little prayer also helps to find Wisdom, inspiration and goals: the strength, motivational tools, and all people to help where necessary.  When there is no godfather or godmother, no pillar to lean on, then you must find your pillar by yourself.  Networking is a good source of a pillar, practice your skills most often and find a mentor. Success does not mean it has to be a one-day breakthrough.  It takes steps, and each step is an accomplishment leading to the next level.  Patience is also a virtue between self passion and success.

Ensure to find your necessity and fulfil your dreams.  Take courage and attempt.  It is positive to try and fail instead of not trying at all. When we try and fail, we learn, we look back and find realisation, then make an amendment, and try again, surely we will make it.  You can be whatever that you wish to be, for the future is in your own hands.   May we find the course to rejoice and enjoy life with the fruits of our labour.

HANDWASHING IS PARAMOUNT

 HAND WASHING IS IMPORTANT:  

Hand washing is not a new word it has existed for many years right from creation. Guess we first learn how to wash our hands at home and then school.  In health, Nurses talk about handwashing and even attend courses on this subject “The handwashing technique”, but, little said about educating the public under health promotion.

HAND WASHING FOR EVERYONE

The hands touch all parts of our body and material things, the hair when scratching and the entire body. We sneeze, toileting, touching clothes, both clean and dirty. One fascinating observation is the railway station’s stair rails, escalators, we all hold these rails and how many of us ever think to wash our hands afterwards, even before eating or touching other things that are already clean.  We spread the dirtiness from our hands, to clean environments.  We must wash our hands always.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HANDWASHING

Handwashing is critical because through the hands we get food poisoning, allergic reactions, flu and infections, among others.  Our nails should be kept clean, short and presentable.  There are many nail file package in the market that need not break the purse, and there is no need to visit the nail technician every week but at least once a month or as recommended by your technician, moreover, as finance allow us to do so.  However, remember to check if you have high blood sugar (Diabetes).  And if yes, there are many measures to prevent skin cut as healing does take time with diabetic clients.

Handwashing is part of the activities of daily living.  We must wash our hands, but the fact remains that how many washing facilities are available.  Take for instance, at the train station you only see washing sink in the ladies and gents facilities and nowhere else.  The restaurants have no sinks for customers, and shops have no implementation of washing hands or cleansers before touching selling clothes and shoes.  Food supermarkets equally share the same attitude, etc.

However, we need to improve this area of health care for all.  Bus stations the same thing, no facilities.  At the hospitals, almost the same except that few Wards have hallway sinks for everyone to wash their hands, but generally, the answer is no.  Moreover, l have seen a few healthcare professionals not washing clients hands and serving them food, and not given them hand towels to clean their hands after using the commode, they argue, but we the Nurses have done the cleaning.  Well, this group of clients are used to washing hands at home after using facilities, and such a habit should continue irrespective.

Similarly, in Intensive Care Units, there are sinks availabilities but not at the door entrance or hallways.  Hospitals should show good examples by providing handwashing sinks right at the primary access to the hospitals because staff and visitors have just come off their cars, trains, buses and touched objects, hands need washing but no accessibilities.

TEACH THE YOUNG GENERATION

We should teach the young generation the importance of handwashing before and after activities, and it is paramount in health promotion.  Hand washing is part of preventive measures from becoming ill.  Everyone irrespective of age or health condition.  Both sick and sound minds should endeavour to wash their hands or carry good hand cleansers in their work bags, school bags and business bags.  A healthy lifestyle includes regular hand washing, do this most often and enjoy a good quality of life.

THE LAW OF THE ROAD:

The law of the road must be adhered to and obey.  Many occasions l have observed rough drivers and intimidations, especially when there is opposite sex on the wheel.

WHAT IS THE POINT

The point is that it is not how good or how bad we are on the road.  We must think of other road users and yourself.  I work across Intensive Care Units and have treated and caring for trauma clients.  It is not fun when this happens, and any family will agree that it is not fun.

There are many reasons and factors why there are rules, dos and don’ts on the major roads, streets and rural villages.  If we obey, then, everyone is safe.  Had l  known is not always the best outcome of any situation, because at such point, perhaps too late?  Prevention is still the best policy.  Eat well, sleep well, exercise and have fun, look fresh in the morning and start the day with gladness.  Happiness comes from within, and with gifted joy, the sky is the limit in doing what is right and just.

RECOMMENDATION

Follow the law of the road. Know your left from right, obey the recommended miles in any Country roads, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and you the driver and your passengers will be safe as well as other road users.  We all know what l am talking about, and it is not new to anyone, especially drivers.  Drive safe and keep safe.  Check the DVLA site regularly to see updated articles and recommendations.

It is crucial to think of actions, responsibilities and consequences.  Do not drink-drive or under the influence of some form of drugs and is hyperactive.  Check your medication side effects, that it does not contain drowsiness.  If feeling unwell, do not drive and also listen to your instinct, sometimes we have this strange feeling like “l don’t feel like driving” best to listen to oneself.  We are accountable for our actions, and ignorance is no excuse, they said.  Therefore, we should take responsibility at all cost.

IT IS A PLEASURE TO DRIVE

It is a pleasure to drive.  Keep your driving particulars updated, ensure your driving license is up to date.  Respect the roads and the road users, drive like a professional. How you drive presents your personality to other drivers and all the roads users.  The mannerism of the road demands respect, control, focus, attention and obedient. No matter how late we are to a destination, there is no need to disobey the law of the streets and highway, because when unexpected happens, then, we are unable to continue the journey anyway. Therefore, organise your time, go to bed early, early to bed and early to rise. Take a walk, get some fresh air and have holidays booked to enhance relaxation, eat well and keep fit.   Avoid rushing by all means and stay safe.  Let us show our young ones the best practice.  Obedience is the beginning of Wisdom.

The functions of electrolytes in the body system are amazing and how to get it balanced is by having a healthy diet.  Firstly, electrolytes in human beings consist of sodium, calcium, potassium.  Also, magnesium, bicarbonate, chloride and phosphate.  Proper maintenance has its functional roles in our body system, and yet individual electrolyte works together to compensate each other.  The simple fact is that electrolytes are good for us because it helps with regulations of nerves and muscles.  Also, it balances the blood acidity and improves hydration. 

Electrolytes serve as a maintenance to the cardiovascular system, respiratory, neurology, renal system.  The kidneys play a significant role and electrolyte help as a building block of cells for clinical normality. These are like a substance that controls electricity once dissolve in water. This area of health-care should be looked into for individuals, to achieve a healthier living and preventive effects of signs and symptoms of severe low maintenance.

Chicken, turkey, fish such as flounder, soybeans, buttermilk and yoghurt too, are inclusive.  Best to have a balanced diet, keep up with the five fruits a day and all electrolytes should be up to clinical parameters.

Speak to your doctor should there be any concerns or a Nutritionist.  It is paramount to maintain a balanced diet and to keep electrolytes up to the level required for individuals.

WHY DO WE LOSE OUR MAINTAINANCE

We lose these maintenances due to medical instability, and electrolytes need balancing.  However, because of some medical conditions, such as poor diet, a prolonged period of vomiting and diarrhoea.  And, also polyuric episodes, dehydration after exercises, as a result of insensible loss through sweat. Some medication also causes loss of electrolytes, take diuretics, for instance.  Age is also a factor; severe dehydration and malnourishment also drop electrolytes level.

HOSPITAL NURSING CARE

Hospital-based care and the community Nurses and Doctors will monitor the maintenance level.  A blood sample to the laboratory and the results will tell the concentration level.  If the results show a low level, the Nurses will replace the particular maintenance and bring it up to the standard required.  Also, if the electrolytes become high such as potassium, for instance, this is reversible to bring it down to the average level and prevent the effects of cardiac instability.  Sodium, calcium and magnesium should not be too high or, too low either. It is recommendable that everyone knows about electrolytes and its functions, and what to do in the event of imbalances.

Mother of invention, indeed.  WOW!  Let the Count Down Begins!  It is inspiring and exciting to welcome 2020 in just a few days.  What message do we have for 2019 and what is yet to accomplish in 2019, welcome a new decade 2020?  It is great to be a witness to a beautiful new year.  What are we carrying over into 2020 from 2019?  Too many questions, are there answers?  Firstly, above all else, we must remember to be thankful for this day.

WHAT IS NECESSITY AND MOTHER OF INVENTION

A need to make it happen, you find a way to break out and achieve your wish.  It is a periodic proverb of ages.  Old things pass away and new ideas being.  Life is a journey, and life experience must go on.  Therefore, we must have had excellent or unacceptable experiences in 2019.  What are we going to do about it?  A change, decision making, discipline, determination, acceptance and or do nothing?

LIFE IS A JOURNEY

Hence life is a journey.  It is best to look forward to a right course of change, and accept situation either good or bad in other to make that change.  With determination and discipline to succeed, the sky would be the limit.  Life is tough, and only the strong survive the odds.  It is, therefore, paramount that we remain strong no matter what.  We must face life because it is not a matter of choice.  Although we have a choice, best to chose wisely and faced life irrespective.  Once we are alive, we are supposed to meet each day as it comes. With a little prayer, we will survive and succeed.

THE MESSAGE

The message is that we should make a list of the plan of action for 2020, write them down securely, this is your Goal, trust instinct, believe, be inspired, determined and have a focus. Keep the commitment to maximum, be honest to oneself in all actions, don’t just write it, do it!  In six months, review your list and see if there is a need to carry on with the existing plan, or necessity to amend.  Sleep well, eat and relax, keep a healthy lifestyle, and you will be fit to carry out your 2020 wish list.  Ask for Wisdom because Wisdom creates insight and understanding.  Meanwhile, knowledge brings about physical and physical becomes a reality. May you receive the Gift of the Highest.
